Houston, TX
Travertine is one of the most reliable paving materials available, but no stone is perfect. Houston homeowners occasionally run into issues, and almost all of them are fixable or preventable. Here is what we see most often and how to handle it.
White haze on the surface a few months after installation. This is mineral salt rising through the stone as it dries. Solution: leave it alone for 60-90 days, then clean with a dedicated efflorescence remover. Common and harmless in Houston due to humidity.
Houston well water and even some city water leaves orange-brown stains on light travertine. Solution: redirect sprinkler heads, install a water softener for irrigation, and clean stains with oxalic acid cleaners.
Houston clay soil moves. If a paver sinks, lift it, add or remove sand, and reset. This is the huge advantage of pavers over poured concrete: instant repair.
Travertine naturally has voids. Lower grades have more. Solution: buy first-grade material from a direct importer like DSS, where we sort and inspect every container.
Oak tannins, bird droppings, and algae. Solution: routine pressure washing and optional sealing every 3-5 years.
