Houston, TX
One of the most important and least understood decisions in any travertine project is thickness. Houston buyers often ask: should I get 3cm or 5cm travertine pavers? The wrong choice can mean cracked pavers, blown budgets, or installation headaches. Here is what you need to know.
3cm is the standard thickness for residential pool decks, patios, walkways, and pedestrian areas in Houston. It is light enough to handle easily, affordable, and strong enough for any foot traffic application. The vast majority of Houston backyard projects use 3cm.
5cm pavers, also called 2-inch or "tumbled French" thickness, are required for any application that will see vehicle traffic: driveways, porte-cocheres, and parking areas. They are also chosen for sand-set installations where extra strength against settling is desired. 5cm costs about 40-60% more than 3cm.
Mistake 1: using 3cm on a driveway. It will crack within a year. Always use 5cm for vehicle areas. Mistake 2: paying for 5cm on a pool deck. Total waste of money for a pedestrian-only zone. Mistake 3: mixing thicknesses without planning the elevation difference at transitions.
3cm pavers can be set in mortar over a concrete slab or on a sand base over compacted limestone. 5cm pavers are almost always set on a deep compacted base with sand bedding, like traditional pavers.
For a 600 sq ft pool deck, choosing 5cm over 3cm adds roughly $1,500-2,500 in material cost with no functional benefit. Save the money for nicer color or better coping.
